Artist: The Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli
The Lamentation over the Dead Christ is a painting completed around 1490-1492 by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. Currently, the painting is located in the Alte Pinakothek, in Munich. In the painting, the lifeless body of Christ is encircled by the Virgin, St. Peter and Mary Magdalene, St. Jerome, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Paul and they are lamenting over his body.
The painful expressions on the faces of the characters were exclusivity in Botticelli’s style. The work has spiritual influence of Savonarola’s preachings in Florence to show more close and painstaking religious reflection.
