Artist: The Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerck
The subject of Man of Sorrows was painted by the Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerck. The theme portrays Jesus Christ I surrounded by angels after the crucifixion and his wounds are prominent in the painting. He is wearing the crown of thorns and a loincloth. Van Heemskerck has depicted Christ with an erection, which according to some scholars interpretation, is a symbol of his resurrection and lifelong power.
